13 Mini Book Reviews

Each year I set myself a challenge of reading at least one book a month. Last year I managed to read a total of 13 books. I personally don't put any thought into what I'll read so I end up reading any book. Some people however like to read reviews and seek out inspiration, therefore I have decided to do a mini review of each book I read last year.

Unnatural Causes by Dr Richard Shepherd (Non Fiction) - I will forever be a medical geek despite giving it up. It will come as no surprise that I loved this book about Dr Richard Shepherds years of experience in working with the deceased. Stories range from 9/11 to British events over the past few decades. It is a real eye opener and fascinating for anyone interested in what happens to bodies after life ends.

The Language of Kindness by Christie Watson (Non Fiction) - I almost didn't like this book which was a real surprise given it's my favourite genre. The first few chapters were a bit choppy and some points I may have been too critical about. However she moves onto working with babies and the real story begins. It will break your heart but also educate you on a department I have not found any other author to write about.

Confessions Of an Undercover Cop by Ash Cameron (Non Fiction) - If I could, I would be a police officer. Life however has other plans and so this is as close as I'll get. It will educate you on some police terminology and have you delve into a whole other world. The stories vary from interesting to down right shocking and will have you thinking 'I wonder what happened to her?'.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (Fiction) - I thought this was going to be thriller however it wasn't but more of a very engaging mystery crossed with a story about race and family. It was beautifully written and I just couldn't put it down.

I Know You by Annabel Kantara (Mystery/Thriller) - I took a little while to get into this story but once I did, I was gripped. There were many twists and possible suspects and that was why I enjoyed it so much.

Shopaholic Abroad by Sophie Kinsella (Fiction) - If you loved the confessions of a shopaholic movies, then you will enjoy this book which is the continuation from the film (which was adapted from the first book). It features the same loveable characters which makes it so easy to get into. The story is based in New York this time.

Faking Friends by Jane Fallon (Fiction) - I read this book in about 3 days because I was so hooked on the story line. It was about discovering your partner had cheated on you with your best friend and having to set up a new life. Also include a renovation you can imagine and some revenge.

Over You by Lucy Diamond  (Fiction) -  Ive read a few books by Lucy Diamond so far. I remember flying through this book but I can't remember much about it...oops. If I flew through it, it must have been good.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine By Gail Honeyman (Fiction) - A Scottish author who doesn't live too far from me. This was a good read, the end had a twist I didn't expect. The whole book kept me intrigued by wanting to find out more. Features mental health, love, and a character you will hate.

Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson (Murder Mystery) - My sister gave me this to read as she said I would enjoy it. She was right, I did enjoy it. Classic who done it murder mystery.

A Good Girls Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson (Murder Mystery) - My sister also gave me this to read. I can't remember which one came first but this book and the one above do carry on from each other. Also a great murder mystery read. Both books also have the potential to make you cry.

Why Mummy Drinks By Gill Sims (Fiction) - I thought this was a non-fiction book but it turns out it's fictional characters with a story based on motherhood, making an app and odd family members. I did laugh out loud at one point. In was an entertaining read and I will be likely to pick up the other books in the series.

In a Dark Dark Wood By Ruth Ware (Murder Mystery) - Another murder mystery which I would relate to The Hunting Party. It was a little predictable who the murderer was as it turned out to be my first and only guess.  However I enjoyed it for the different story line and different type of murder situation. It did keep me in suspense at the end too which is a bonus.

Wow that took a while. I tried to keep reviews short and minimal to avoid spoiling. The whole idea was to share some book suggestions for anyone running out of ideas or needing a book to get through some more lockdown life.

If you have any book suggestions, I would love to hear them.
